This course offers a historical overview of the main literary movements within (Western) European literature. It studies literary developments in their socio-cultural context and highlights the most important genres and authors for each movement. By studying representative examples, students gain insight into the various movements, their interrelations and developments. The course provides a literary-historical framework that serves as a basis for further literary study.
The course is taught in Dutch.
1. Students know the main European literary movements from Antiquity to the present day and can situate these in a socio-cultural context.
2. Students are familiar with the most important genres, authors and works for each movement and can situate these in time and space.
3. Students have insight in the way movements develop and relate to each other.
4. Students are able to interpret representative examples.
5. Students can apply literary-historical concepts correctly.
6. Students understand how literary value judgements are historically determined.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
