This course provides an introduction in Operations Research and envisions insight in and skills for mathematical modelling and optimisation techniques for different optimisation problems.
This course concerns optimisation problems. First we discuss mathematical problems and their formulation with variables and constraints. Next we provide an in-depth introduction on uni-criterium optimisation. We discuss linear optimisation as well as combinatorial and integer optimisation, non-linear optimisation and convextity. Consecutively, we turn to multi-criteria optimisation and decision making under uncertainty. Finally, the complexity of methods and heuritiscs is discussed.
Software labs comprise the hands-on illustration of theory and cases with the appropriate software (such as MS Excel/Solver and a specialized optimisation package).
All electronic material used will be made available through Canvas.
In case of guest lectures, attending the session is mandatory and the presented information is integrally part of the course content.
Knowledge of quantitative deterministic techniques used in modern decision support, including their application range and limitations.
Apply OR techniques to mathematically formulate a practical decision making problem as an optimisation problem, solve it and provide mathematical as well as managerial insight in the results.
Use standard software (such as MS Excel/Solver and optimisation packages) to model and solve decision making problems quantitatively.
