Course Content

Apart from a profound overview of different themes and theoretical approaches in the sociology of time, this course also pays attention to methodological questions in the field. Recent and classical texts on sociology of time are read and discussed during the courses. There is a lot of attention too for the empirical studies of our own research group on time use and temporal order. In some of the lessons students discuss together with researchers on analyses and findings concerning current aspects of time use and temporal ordering.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

At the end of the course, students should have:

  • a profound knowledge of the most important themes, theoretical approaches and methodological aspects of the sociology of time and temporal ordering
  • an insight in the social importance of the sociological study of temporal aspects of society
  • be able to analyse and interpret contemporary social temporal problems.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 70% of the final mark.
PRAC Presentation determines 30% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Mondeling Examen with a relative weight of 70 which comprises 70% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Presentation category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Presentatie en medewerking with a relative weight of 30 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

    Note: Participation during the courses (presentation, participation discussions, attendance, ...)

Additional info regarding evaluation

In addition to the oral exam (70%), the cooperation during the courses is graded for 30%. The cooperation can consist of presenting a text, acting as moderator of the discussion, participating in the discussions, attendance in the lessons, etc.

For the working students, the cooperation during courses is replaced by an individual task.
