This course consists of an in depth study of the international law of the sea by means of case studies, followed by a number of critical questions aimed not only at testing the knowledge of the basic rules applicable to this field of law, but also linking up to other parts of the law of the sea or international law more generally. These case studies cover about all major branches of the law of the sea and relate not only to the different maritime zones (high seas, internal waters, territorial sea, contiguous zone, exclusive economic zone, deep seabed), but also to issues such as maritime delimitation, straits, archipelagic waters, protection and preservation of the marine environment, conservation and management of high seas living resourses, maritime terrorism and security, and settlement of disputes.

The student is able to independently analyse concrete cases in the area of the international law of the sea and can frame them as legal issues to which he is able to apply the relevant international legal instrucments by making use primarily of the applicable international conventions and rules of customary international law.
