Course Content

This course provides an introduction in pharmaco-epidemiology for future pharmacists. The purpose of this course is to provide future pharmacists the necessary knowledge to understand a parmaco-epidemiological study, be able to critically review a study and apply this knowledge in clinical practice. Different topics will be addressed during lectures:

- brief reftresher course of important statistical concepts
- introduction to epidemiology
- insight in basic terminology and principles of epidemiology and pharmaco-epidemiology
- overview of the important study designs in pharmaco-epidemiology
- overview of the different forms of errors, bias and confounding, and methods to prevent them
- overview of different data sources used in pharmaco-epidemiological research
- critical appraisal of pharmaco-epidemiological articles

The theoretical aspects from the lectures will be applied in practical seminars. The different aspects will be addressed in interactive sessions. In a group assignement, students have to prepare a pharmaco--epidemiological research proposal based on a given article. the proposal should be presented orally followed by a discussion round.

Presence during the WPO is obligatory. When an absence cannot be justified, the student will be excluded from participation in the exam and the complete course has to be retaken the following academic year.

By the end of this course, students should:

  • understand and explain the basic concepts of epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology
  • be able to independently formulate a research question and translate this research question in a research object
  • recognize the epidemiological measures of frequency and association, be able to explain them, and be able to calculate these measures
  • understand the concept of causation and be able to explain the different aspects of causation in pharmaco-epidemiology
  • recognize and explain the most important pharmaco-epidemiological research methods
  • know the advantages and disadvantages of the different study designs, critically analyse and appropriately choose a certain design based on a given research question
  • be able to name the different data sources used in pharmaco-epidemiological research, elaborate on them, and know their advantages and disadvantages
  • be able to recognize the different forms of errors, bias and confounding, and know how to avoid them
  • understand a pharmaco-epidemiological study, be able to critically review a study and apply the knowledge in clinical practice

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 75% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 25% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • schriftelijk with a relative weight of 75 which comprises 75% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • opstellen onderzoeksvoorstel with a relative weight of 25 which comprises 25% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:

  • written exam determines 75% of the final mark
  • WPO including the creation of a report and presentation with discussion round determines 25% of the final mark

A second chance for WPO is not possible. In the 2nd examination period the WPO score of the 1st term will be used again for the calculation of the final result.
