Course Content

This course focuses on contemporary youth crime and justice issues, related to youth crime phenomena, comprehensive frameworks and new theories, as well as on social reaction on youth crime. The themes and questions that will be handled in this course change on a yearly basis and will be mentioned in the beginning of each academix year via pointcarré. Besides the yearly, recurrent theme of "gender and youth crime and justice", the following themes can be discussed:

  • Judicial pathways, impact of interventions and emerging adulthood.
  • Children's rights
  • Police and youngsters
  • Youth victimology (abuse, institutional violence)
  • International comparative perspective on youth justice systems and practices
  • Radicalisation 

These issues are approached on 4 levels (theoretical, methodolical, international-comparative and historical).

The seminars are compulsory.

Additional info

This course is also available for the evening student program. However a more autonomous approach from behalf of the students is expected. At least three moments of contact and guidance between students and professor(s) (interactive seminars) is foreseen. The following studying material will be used:

1. A handbook: the precise title will be made available via Pointcarré at the beginning of each ac. year

2. A Reader with (titles of) scientific literature concerning the selected specific issues that will be made available via Pointcarré at the beginning of each ac. year.

3. Different assignments, instructions, slides, questions for discussion, etc. will be made available on the Pointcarre site during the course.

The attendance of the interactive seminars for evening students is obligatory.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

The aim is to widen/deepen your scientific knowledge on questions concerning juvenile crime, the causes of juvenile crime and the reaction on juvenile crime, specifically condsidering the gender dimension. 

Your scientific specialisation shoul be achieved on the following levels:

  • theoretical
  • methodological
  • international-comparative
  • historical

To prepare the student in an international professional context a part of this course (1/3) will be in English and/or French. The international scientific literature will be in French and or English. 

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
LEC Presentation determines 30% of the final mark.
LEC Paper determines 70% of the final mark.

Within the LEC Presentation category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral Presentation with a relative weight of 30 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

Within the LEC Paper category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Individual Paper with a relative weight of 70 which comprises 70% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The student has to make an individual paper that he or she will have to defend, with an oral presentation. The paper must be submitted during the first week after winterholidays (January) (the exact date will be mentioned in class and via pointcarré).

The evaluation will be as follows:
70% for the individual paper
30% for the oral presentation and for defending the paper

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.

Academic context

This course offer isn't part of a fixed set of graduation requirements. Hence, it is a free elective.
