Course Content

[Foreign reporting] Using many concrete examples the students acquire an insight into the different ways that Belgian and foreign media handle their reporting from abroad. In the process much emphasis is put on new ways of selecting news, the need to do your own fieldwork, and developing a personal style. It is also the aim that at the end of the course unit students will write their own article which will primarily be inspired by a recent trip.
[Political reporting] Students acquire a thorough knowledge of the political structures in Belgium. They are introduced to what political journalism is today and to the context in which the political journalist works. The emphasis lies on the interaction between local and national (regional) politics. The students develop an article on the basis of their own information gathering.
[Legal reporting] Students gain insight into the sources of legal reporters. Where do they get their information and documentation, what are their tools? And more, what are the pitfalls of legal reporting (with a reference to the rulings of the
Raad voor de Journalistiek, www.rvdj.be)? Students learn about judicial organisation and procedures and are familiarised with the rights and obligations of the court reporter. That includes restrictions imposed by law on legal reporting and those of professional ethics, with the issue of “naming names”.
