Course Content

We learn the techniques of different types of interviews: informative, human interest and critical interviews. The student learns how to operate as an interviewer in the most effective manner. An important facet is the preparation; in which phases does the preparation come about? What must one take heed of? What problems can occur with this specific interviewee? What solution can be employed? What kind of questions exist and what is their impact? What is the aim of the interview and can that aim be achieved? When interviewing, it is largely about the strategy that is followed in the conversation. What are the crucial moments and how does one react if the interviewee deviates from the pattern that the student had in mind? How can one get a conversation going again? How does one solve a crisis in the interview? How does one entice the interviewee to make statements about a subject that the interviewee would rather avoid? How does one change strategies during the interview? These are a few questions that will be discussed and answered in depth. The student will also gain practical experience in interviewing during the course. This will enable him/her to interview people independently. We practice these techniques in "live" situations and record them with a camera. We analyse the interviews afterwards; we are critical and pay attention to interviewing techniques, formulation of phrases, fluency and whether the student reacted in an alert manner
[news gathering] Every news item contains information. This information comes from news sources. We make a list of possible news sources, we consider how sources can aid or harm journalists, and how reliable sources can be distinguished from fake ones. In the exercises we investigate how rigourously journalists follow the directives concerning news sources. What if we end up in a grey zone? What is more important: the audience's right to be informed or the journalist's obligation to meet the deadline?
