Inhoud

The aim of 'International Business Law' is to provide students with a hands-on, general introduction to the basics of international business law, with a particular emphasis on rules and concepts of international and private law from a transactional perspective.  

Through this course, students will become increasingly aware of the influence and importance of law in their future business transactions and dealings, particularly in the international context.

The following topics will be addressed:

  • Introduction to international business transactions
  • Ethics of international business
  • Commercial dispute resolution
  • Trade regulation
  • Comparative legal systems
  • Contracts and sales law
  • Forms of business organizations
  • Property rights
  • Privacy and data law

Teaching Methods

Lectures, class discussions, case studies and in-class activities:

Through a combination of theory-based learning as supported by practical exercises and group work, students will gain an awareness and understanding of key concepts in international business law. 

Lectures are based on interactive discussions and activities including case studies & debates that support legal theories learned in class. Classes will be held in combination of both distance and face-to-face sessions (on campus). 

Students are strongly encouraged to actively contribute to class lectures and group work in a meaningful way.

  • Lecture: 20 hours (10 x 2 hours)
  • Practicals: 7 hours
  • Independent study: 150 hours (keeping up with course materials during semester, pre-reading, and preparation final exam).

General competencies

Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

  • identify legal issues involved in strategic business decisions, in particular related to international trade and commercial contracts;
  • make informed business decisions, including how to instruct counsel when appropriate; 
  • examine emerging trends in international business law; and
  • demonstrate sensitivity to the importance of ethical considerations in business decision making.

Closed book, written exam determines 100% of the final mark and will consist of a combination of multiple choice and open questions.
