4 ECTS credits
110 u studietijd
Aanbieding 1 met studiegidsnummer 4016484ENR voor alle studenten in het 2e semester met een verdiepend master niveau.
The most important goal of the course is to make the link between the microstructure of ceramics and their properties (structural and functional). Further more characterization methods will be used in practice.
The course starts with the synthesis routes for ceramics.
The most common crystallographic structures are discussed.
Some properties of inorganic materials are discussed in combination with their microstructure.
This course aims at linking chemistry to material science.

The students must understand the behaviour of ceramic material from their molecular structure. They will be able to use this knowledge for the characterization and modification of properties. This knowledge must enable them to understand the sustainability of material, in a later course, and to develop new products. They must understand the most important production processes and be able to do a proposal for the synthesis of new materials. The most important characterization techniques must be known, meaning: the working principle and interpretation of the results.
The students will be able to independently search in the literature, comprehend, critically evaluate (correctness and scope of sometimes incomplete data) and present this information.
This course contributes to reaching the following learning objectives.
The Master of Sciences in Chemical and Materials Engineering has in-depth knowledge and understanding of
MA_1 exact sciences with the specificity of their application to engineering
MA_17 an integrated insight in chemical process and materials' technology
MA_18 insight in chemistry as a link between process and materials technology
The Master of Sciences in Chemical and Materials Engineering has
MA_15 the flexibility and adaptability to work in an international and/or intercultural context
MA_16 an attitude of life-long learning as needed for the future development of his/her career
