3 ECTS credits
75 h study time
Offer 1 with catalog number 1015675BNR for all students in the 2nd semester at a (B) Bachelor - advanced level.
The first chapter illustrates the importance of ‘materials’ in the Belgian and European economy. The stress and strain concept is discussed in the second chapter. In the following chapter the relation between stress and strain (stress-strain curve) and the importance of mechanical properties like yield stress, ultimate stress, ductility, brittleness, stiffness and toughness are discussed. The difference between linear-elastic, visco-elastic and plastic material behaviour is described as well. Finally some simple load cases like uniaxial loaded members and beams loaded in torsion or bending are discussed.
During the laboratory work different material systems (metals, PVC, glass fiber reinforced polyester, IPC,..) are produced and experimentally tested. The obtained results are reported, compared and presented.
Lecture notes are available on Canvas.
The importance of materials as a basic resource (scarcity) and as an economical value and potential is illustrated. The basic concepts of ‘mechanics of materials’, like stress, strain and their relation, should be clearly understood. The student will get detailed insight in the determination of important mechanical properties from experimental tests and the important role they play in the material choice for a specific application.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 60% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 40% of the final mark.
Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
- Oral examination: 60%
- Laboratory work, presentation and report: 40%
Participation to the laboratory work and exercises is compulsory!
