Course Content

The course consists of three parts:
I. the experiments
The students execute experiments in mechanics, electromagnetism and waves. They prepare the experiment at home, execute it during classes and make a report. Matlab is used for the analysis of the data.
II. Introduction to the Matlab software package.
III. introduction to the statistical analysis of experimental data.

Course material
Digital course material (Required) : Experimentele fysica, Syllabus, Canvas
Digital course material (Required) : Experimentele fysica, Nota’s over Matlab en statistiek, Canvas
Additional info

The attendance at all classes and laboratory experiments is compulsary.
Students who are absent without legal reason at 25% or more of the sessions of a part of the course will obtain a score of 0/20 as examination score for that part of the course. The experiments are described in the syllabus which is available in digital form on Pointcarre.
Matlab and statistics: notes are available in Pointcarre

Complementary study material:
the following courses tought in 1BA Fysica:  "mechanics" and "electromagnetism and waves"

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

The objective of this course is to teach the student the basic competences in experimental physics:
-setting up an experiment
-take data
-analyse the data, understand experimental uncertainties
-write a report
-give an oral presentation
-work with the Matlab software package.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
PRAC Lab Work determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Lab Work category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • WPO experimenten with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Note: De verslagen van de proeven worden geevalueerd

Additional info regarding evaluation

After each experiment a report is written for which a score is given. For 2 experiments a more extended scientific report is requested. An oral presentation is given for one of the experiments. The scores given on the reports and the oral presentation form the global score for the course.

There is no examination. There is no possibility to do an examination in the second session.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
