Course Content

This course consists of three parts: (1) introduction; (2) survival analysis; and (3) multilevel analysis.

The introduction (part 1) recapitulates the necessary inferential and multivariate statistical concepts and techniques. Special attention is paid to non-linear and non-additive effects in regression models, and to direct and indirect standardisation techniques.

Part 2 probes into survival analysis. Both discrete and continuous time models are dealt with.

Part 3 focuses on multilevel analyses, a technique that enables to adequately analyse hierarchical data.

Learning Outcomes

General competences

Specific objectives are specified at the beginning of each class. Summed up: at the end of this course, students should be able:

  • to explain in their own words the theoretical background of advanced multivariate data analysis techniques for social sciences;
  • to choose between data methods taking research design and data quality into account;
  • to conduct direct and indirect standardisation techniques and calculate their corresponding composite measures;
  • to interpret the results of advanced statistical techniques critically and report on these ethically.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 80% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Interim Task with a relative weight of 10 which comprises 10% of the final mark.
  • Written Exam with a relative weight of 70 which comprises 70% of the final mark.

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • SPSS Exam with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

    Note: with oral defence

Additional info regarding evaluation

First session:

  • Interim task: 10% of marks
  • Written exam: 20% of marks is on a practical SPSS exam with oral defence, 70% of marks is on a written exam covering both theory and exercises
  • Students need to pass all exam sections (task, SPSS exam and written exam) in order to obtain a credit for this course.
  • Non-attendance on one of the exam sections implies a ‘non-attendance’ as final result.
  • The exam sections ‘task’,’SPSS exam’ and ‘written exam’ are weighted for 10%, 20% and 70% respectively; yet only when you pass each section. In case of not passing every section, the lowest grade counts as the final mark.
  • The specific results of the different exam sections (task, SPSS exam and written exam), will be transferred to second session, in case of obtaining at least 50% on the exam section concerned.

Second session:

  • Idem first session.
  • Students need to pass all exam sections (task, SPSS exam with oral defence and written exam) in order to obtain a credit for this course.
  • In case of not obtaining a credit for this course, results of specific exam sections are not transferable to the next academic year.

For more information: see study guide.
