The Capita Selecta Multimedia (CSM) seminars series is based on interactive sessions where students discuss with the teacher and/or an invited expert. Students study scientific papers on topics of their choice, after approval by the teacher.
The selected themes are based on the interests of the participating students.
A non-exclusive list of potential themes encompasses: sound, image and video processing, sound and image synthesis, text and image analysis, high-dynamic range and immersive imaging, error-resilient coding, compression, the human visual system and perceptual metrics, human-machine interaction, 3D graphics and rendering, sociological aspects of new media, multimedia security, …
Students will present and animate group discussions. They will be asked to provide their synthesis with a preliminary 3-minutes pitch, then an extended 20-minutes presentation. Typically, two topics per student are covered. Towards the end of the seminar, each student will redact a short report on his/her favorite topic. Posters for pitches, slides for presentations and reports will be shared among all participants on the Canvas web platform.
Attendance is mandatory . Unjustified no-show will be compensated by writing a report on a topic that were presented at the session (two or three topics are typically covered per session).
Students will be exposed to various recent topics in multimedia and will acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding of advanced methods and theories to schematize and model complex problems or processes.
Students will gain experience in presenting and explaining complex computational methods to a general audience. The format of the seminar adheres to professional work environment where communications through limited time presentations is usual in group meetings.
Students will develop thinking out of the box and evaluate projects, systems and processes, particularly when based on incomplete, contradictory and/or redundant information. He/she will adopt a critical, but constructive, attitude towards one’s own results and those of others.
