5 ECTS credits
130 h study time
Offer 1 with catalog number 1009860CNR for all students in the 2nd semester at a (C) Bachelor - specialised level.
This course is an introduction to the basic concepts of training theory and exercise physiology. Within the exercise physiology part, the different physiological adaptations of the human body to exercise and sport are discussed, including the influence of hormones. 2 big questions are answered: what happens within the body during exercise, and what adaptation occur due to training? In this context, other topics are discussed within sports medicine and the way in which the energy systems provide the necessary energy for exercise. Furthermore, the role of the cardiovascular and respiratory system during exercise is explored, with both a look at the aerobic and anaerobic energy supply. In addition, the role of strength training in the training process is also examined. The training theory part provides an overview of the basics of training theory and how to integrate them into different training programs.
The practicals of Training Theory and Exercise Physiology are intended to practically translate the principles presented in the theoretical classes and to provide specific examples in relation to the adjustments to exercise, the testing of athletes and the translation of obtained test results into a targeted training plan. Use is made of the facilities of the VUB to organize various lessons where the students are testing themselves. Students are expected to translate test results into an appropriate training schedule, which will also be evaluated within the classes.
Digital course material will be made available to the students through "Canvas".
A lot of attention is given to recent scientific literature that will also be made available through "Canvas".
This course is open for incoming exchange students. Course reader is in English.
The student has to follow the group division as it is available on 'Canvas'.
Knowledge and insight
The student knows the (exercise)physiological background of physical performance.
The student knows the (exercise)physiological background of adaptations of the human body because of a training programme.
The student has relevant knowledge of the basic concepts of training, strength, speed, agility, endurance in specific populations.
Application
The student can use the skills, knowledge and principles to create a training programme for athletes of all levels.
The student has the required skills to transfer his knowledge to athletes and coaches in the field.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 70% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 30% of the final mark.
Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
The final grade on 20 is the combination of the grades on the practical exam (30%) and the theoretical exam (70%). In case of an insufficient grade on HOC or WPO (lower than 8/20), there will not be a weighted mean, but the lowest grade will serve as the final grade. If the student obtains at least 10/20 for one part (HOC or WPO), but fails for the overall score on the course, this score (≥10/20) will automatically be transferred to the 2nd exam period. The student cannot undo this automatic transfer. There is no transfer of partial grades to the next academic year.
Both the theoretical and the practical exam are oral exams with written preparation. This is identical in first and second exam period.
