Course Content

The present course aims to map the link between poetry and music, by exploring the definitions of and interpretation strategies for poetry, and by examining how these theories can be used for the study of related poetic forms such as the sound poetry and rap music.

The course will show how play with sounds and rhythm can influence the interpretation of a poem and contribute to the meaning of a poem; how, in the case of poetry set to music, sounds can add to the meaning of and change the interpretation of the poem; and how technological innovations and multimedia have fostered unprecedented tools – acoustic and sound effects – which poets also draw on.
