Course Content

The concepts of fitness, physical activity and sedentary behaviour are studied from a health related/scientific view. The basic concepts of aerobic, muscular fitness and flexibility are discussed. Different training modalities oriented towards the novice fitness practitioner are presented.
The international recommendations as proposed by the ACSM-position stand: “The recommended quantity and quality of Exercise for developing and maintaining Fitness in Healthy adults “ are elaborated.
Different case studies of novice fitness practitioners are discussed and appropriate programs are developed.
For the obliged practical sessions, training of the different muscles and muscle groups is practiced on machines, with free weights and without specific fitness equipment.
Stretching for the major muscles/muscle groups is practiced.

Special attention goes to injury prevention and the link with biomechanics, anatomy and biochemistry.

Additional info

Besides the practical work in the fitness room, study material is handed over with specific exercises and examples. After every theoretical session, the student is expected to apply and practice the course content.

Following Basic FIt rules, for scheduled lessons in Basic Fit the student needs clean sports shoes, a towel and for use of the lockers a small padlock is required. Unlimited acces to the Basic Fit on the campus in Etterbeek is provided (within the basic fit opening hours), without additional costs for the student.


 

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

The student should be able to asses the fitness level of novice fitness practitioners and to develop an adequate program to increase aerobic and/or muscular fitness, and/or balance and flexibility, with continued attention for safety and injury prevention.
 

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 45% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 45% of the final mark.
PRAC Presentation determines 10% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schriftelijk examen with a relative weight of 45 which comprises 45% of the final mark.

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Praktisch examen with a relative weight of 45 which comprises 45% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Presentation category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • groepsopdracht met presentatie with a relative weight of 10 which comprises 10% of the final mark. This is a mid-term test.

Additional info regarding evaluation

For all practical sessions presence is obliged. In case of more than one absence, you will be refused to participate to the exams in both the  first and second exam period and you will get a score of 0/20 in both exam periods.

Group assignment with presentation (10% of total score) in the last week of the semester, about movement and exercise possibilities of a certain joint + Written exam (open questions) concerning the theoretical back ground (45% of total score) and practical exam (45% of total score) in the fitness setting (different instruments, dumble exercises, stretching) with justification of the chosen approach.

No partial exemptions.

Subscores won't be adjusted.

In case the student scores lower than 8/20 on one part (written or practical exam) , no mean score will be calculated and the lowest score of both parts will become the total score. 

In case of a total score lower than 10/20, subscores of 10/20 or higher will be transfered to the second exam period. There will be no transfer of subscores to the next academic year.
