Course Content

The exact content of the course depends on the project at hand. The projects can vary from year to year and from group to group. However, following topics are common to most of the projects:
-characterization: the substances/materials used need to be characterized. This can be mechanical as well as physico-chemical as well as chemical characterization. Specific analytical techniques such as sanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and thermal analysis are used for this.
-building a labscale production unit: a process (for instance water purification) needs to be done at labscale.
-Economic evaluation: each proposed process needs to be checked on its economical achievability.
-computer simulation: the proposed process (or a part of it) will be simulated on a computer.
-juridical aspects: the proposed processes need to fulfil the requirements of the legislation (mainly VLAREM and VLAREA)
-saftey/health and environmental issues
Possible projects are water purification, synthesis of biofuel, fuel cells, recycling electronic equipment.

learning objective
The aim of this seminar is to expose the students to the actual profession of engineering, in other words being able to use exact sciences and existing technology, and to design new technologies, based on exact sciences. This approach is based on problem based learning.
Specifically the occupations of chemical, material sciences or ecological engineer are introduced. The course is an introduction to the major ‘Bachelor of Applied Sciences and Engineering, chemistry and materials’. The content is however broader, in agreement with the objectives of the broad bachelor. The students have to apply knowledge on different disciplines to successfully complete their project. In this view for instance computer simulations have to be done.
Competences
The following aspects are considered:
- being able to delegate tasks, to work in a group, and to lead a group.
-Being able to gather information, both in a library (traditional means), and by electronic means. Knowledge in domains necessary to solve the problem needs to be collected and applied. Their knowledge and insights will have to be used in practice. This should help to attain the ‘life long learning’ attitude.
-problem solving: next to the practical considerations, an economic evaluation is required to be able to choose among different possibilities when scaling up from the lab scale.
-In particular the chemical, material sciences or ecological engineer profession is introduced.
-Consideration of a number of safety aspects, concerning working with toxic chemicals.
- Acquiring a number of specific techniques, specifically in the area of analysis techniques (spectroscopy, gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy, electron microscopy) and in the area of simulation techniques (simulation software, computational fluid dynamics).
-presenting and defending the project in public (students)

Specific learning outcomes:

The Bachelor in Engineering Sciences has a broad fundamental knowledge and understanding of

The Bachelor in Engineering Sciences can

10. correctly report on design results in the form of a technical report or in the form of a paper;

11. present and defend results in a scientifically sound way, using contemporary communication tools;

12. reason in a logical, abstract and critical way;

13. conduct open dialogues, discussions and negotiations, and can write scientific reports and to hold presentations using the most modern ICT technologies;

14. work in team, shows creativity and entrepreneurship, and has intellectual mobility.

The Bachelor in Engineering Sciences has
17. a critical attitude towards one’s own results and those of others;

18. acquired the tools for knowledge collection towards life-long learning.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Exam with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: De studenten worden individueel en in groep beoordeeld tijdens de zittingen door regelmatige besprekingen en observatie. Op deze manier wordt nagegaan in welke mate de beoogde eindcompetenties bereikt werden.
    Tevens dient een schriftelijk verslag van het uitgevoerde werk ingeleverd te worden. Hierbij is elke student van de groep voor een gedeelte verantwoordelijk.
    Tenslotte wordt het project mondeling verdedigd (in groepsverband, de beoordeling gebeurt wel individueel)
    Puntenverdeling: 1/3 op het praktische werk (50 % individueel, 50 % manier van samenwerken in de groep),
    1/3 op de verslagen (groepsscore)
    1/3 op de mondelinge presentatie en discussie (individueel).
    Naast deze punten die door de begeleiders gegeven worden geven de studenten binnen 1 groep elkaar punten om elkaar te rangschikken binnen de groep. Hierdoor kan de totaal score gegeven door de begeleiders nog maximaal 2 punten naar onder of naar boven bijgestuurd worden.
    Aanwezigheid is verplicht. Ongewettigde afwezigheid op 1 sessie leidt tot een 0 quotering voor dit gedeelte.
    Ongewettigde afwezigheid op meer dan 1 sessie, leidt tot een weigering voor deelname aan het examen. Dit wil zeggen een score afwezig voor het vak.
    Ongewettigde afwezigheid op de mondelinge presentatie leidt ook tot een score afwezig voor het vak.
    Voor de 2de zittijd wordt een nieuwe versie,van het gedeelte van het verslag waarvoor de student verantwoordelijk, is gevraagd. De mondelinge presentatie wordt ook opnieuw gedaan.
    De punten kunnen niet gedeeltelijk worden overgedragen naar een volgend jaar.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Students are assessed individually and as part of the group during sessions via discussions and observation. In this way it is checked in how far the objectives are attained.
A written report of the task completed needs be presented. Each student of the team is responsible for a well defined part.
Finally an oral presentation of  project is given (by the team ; assessment takes place individually, however)
1/3 for the lab work (50 %  individually,  50 % as a member of the team)
1/3 for the reports (individual)
1/3 for the oral presentation (individual).
Next to this global score, the students will do peer and self assessment to rank themselves and their colleagues in the group. This will alter the global score.
Attendance is compulsory. Illegitimate absenteeism for 1 session results in a 0 mark for this part.
Illegitimate absenteeism for more than 1 session results in denial of exam participation, equivalent to a non-attendance score for this subject.
Illegitimate absenteeism for the oral presentation also results in an absentee score for this subject.

For the 2nd examination session a new version of the part of the report, for which the student was responsible, is required. The complete oral presentation is also repeated.
Transfer of partial scores from one year to another is impossible.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
