Course Content

The course provides a panoramic-paradigmatic critical overview of the current state of theatre and performance studies. Topics: borderlines: theatre/performance/reality, play, act, perform, text, space. Different approaches to theatre and performance studies (semiotics, anthropology, sociology, historiography) will be tackled. Students are invited to explore the international Brussels’ theatre, performance and dance scene.

When possible guest speakers (academics and artists) share their views and experiences with the students.

Additional info

Students prepare discussion in class using carefully schosen scholarly publications (reader to be announced at the beginning of the course, depending on the proposed topics).

The international Brussels' theatre, dance and performance scene will be explored when discussing the topics.

Students attend at least 5 performances and create a portfolio documenting what they’ve seen in relation to the treated topics.

Critical orientation in the field of theatre studies: become familiar with different academic approaches (theoretical, historical, and contemporary) of theatre, dance and performance. Students are able to critically analyse performances.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Oral Exam with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.
