Course Content

The course offers an overview of the socio-cultural situation in different French-speaking countries.

The aim of the course is to gain an understanding of the complex conditions of the emergence and development of a French-language literature in and outside of France, the aesthetic currents in which it is embedded, the political, cultural, linguistic and institutional history of the countries involved, the links between literatures from different French-speaking countries.

Students will read 4 contemporary novels (published after 2000) written by French-language authors, deepen their knowledge of the general political-cultural-historical (in certain cases postcolonial) context of the literatures covered, and focus on how each of these writers contributes in his or her own way to a reflection on Francophone culture. Students will also be asked to read Le Monde des livres, the supplement of Le Monde published each Friday.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

Students are able to identify, contextualize and explain differences between the different areas of French-language literature, as well as points of divergence, through the notion of la f/Francophonie, its history, its institutions and its cultural mission.

Students are able to illustrate these differences and similarities using examples from the 4 literary works that they read (autonomous reading).

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schriftelijk examen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.
