Course Content

This interactive course will give a contextualised reading of lyric and prose works from the period 1850-1945 delivered in a series of lectures.
The works studied are G. Gezelle and Multatuli, Max Havelaar;  L. Couperus, Noodlot or M. Emants, Een nagelaten bekentenis en H. Gorter, Verzen; K. van de Woestijne, Het Vader-huis and C. Buysse, Het recht van de sterkste or S. Streuvels, Leven en dood in den ast P. van Ostaijen and F. Bordewijk, Bint or Nescio; M. Nijhoff and S. Vestdijk, Kind tusschen vier vrouwen & Terug tot Ina Damman (extracts) or G. Walschap, Houtekiet.

This course is taught in Dutch. For the lecture course, there is a course guide which is supported with slides on Canvas. Texts and syllabus must be prepared for each course.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

- Students can analyse lyrical work and proze (from 1850 utill 1945) and relate it to the literary and extraliterary context.

- Students can use heuristic skill.

- Students can explain mechanisms of the literary evolution (such as the tension between mimesis - breakthrough mimesis, individualism - community art, aestheticism - ethical message, regionalism - cosmopolitanism).

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 70% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 10% of the final mark.
SELF Practical Assignment determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Mondeling examen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 70% of the final mark.

    Note: Oral examination with written preparation (min. 15 minutes). Students cannot pass if they do not master the Standard Dutch language. The written preparation for the oral examination serves only as support for the students, is issued unchanged at the end of the examination and will not be assessed.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Permanente evaluatie with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 10% of the final mark.

    Note: Reading sheets. Only for the second term the permanent evaluation can be replaced by a written assignment.

Within the SELF Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Onderzoeksopdracht with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

    Note: Research report

Additional info regarding evaluation

For the second examination period all tasks must be handed in before 31st of July.

Only students that handed in all tasks in time can take part in the oral examination.

A study guide provided by the lecturer at the start of the semester clarifies the assessment in a binding fashion.
