Course Content
  1. Getting acquainted with the scientific domain of cultural sociology.
  2. Getting acquainted with the theory of symbolic society.
  3. What is meant by culture and what is the contribution of cultural sociology in understanding social inequality?
  4. Getting insight into the different sociological frameworks of interpretation that are used to understand and explain culture’s influence on ways of behaving, thinking and feeling.
  5. Getting insight into the different sociological frameworks that are used to understand the nature of group relations related to social-economic inequality.

General competencies

After following this course the student should have gained knowledge about and insight into:

  • the main paradigms behind the study of values and culture;
  • the main theories concerning group relations related to social inequality (class, education) and in particular realistic group conflict theory, social identity theory and social closure theory;
  • the theory of symbolic society.
