Course Content

The first part of this course gives an overview of (1) a few basic concepts and approaches on equality and inequality and (2) a few sociological explanations on social inequality. The second part treats some actual discussions and tendencies on social equality. In this second part, consisting of guest lectures, different researchers present and discuss recent findings on topics such as gender inequality, youth inequality, inequality and cultural consumption, ...

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

  • To get acquainted with some basic concepts and theoretical insights concerning the sociology of social equality and inequality and as such learn how to apply some general sociological insights.
  • To get acquainted with some sociological explanations on social inequality and be able to evaluate these critically.
  • To get insight and to develop views on current discussions on social inequality.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

  • Oral Exam with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: For students sociology the examination is oral, for all other students the examination is written.
