Course Content

This course is a basic course on Chemistry and consists of the essential elements which are necessary to understand the fundamental aspects of chemische reactions and the composition of matter. Starting from the  basic concepts, the atomic structures and formation of chemical bonds are explained. The main inorganic chemical classes of compounds are discussed and their reactivity. The fundamentals of stoechiometric calculations are explained. The nature of gasses and solutions as well as equations relalting to their physicochemical properties are dealt with. Fundamental aspects of chemical reactions such as kinetic and chemical equilibrium are discussed. Acid-base equilibria and redoxreactions are discussed in detail. The basic concepts of chemical thermodynamics are explained in the final cahpter on general chemistry. The section on Organic Chemistry and Biomecules is not a part of the course for the students Business Engineer.

Learning Outcomes

General competences

Aims

This course aims at providing the students  the essential elements of general chemistry. The student will gain insight in the microscopic structure of matter (atoms, chemical bonds) as well as the macroscpoic nature of matter (physical states and phase changes, characteristics of solutions) as wel as the fundamental aspects of chemical reactions (Stoechiometric calculations, kinetics, chemical equilibria, thermodynamics) and can apply these concepts . The aim of the course is to be able to use these concepts in more advanced industrial and technological courses .

Final competencies

 Students are able to:

  • Describe the microscopic structure of matter (atoms , molecules), determine electronconfigurations and explain the formation of chemical bonds
  • Describe the interactions between molecules (intermolecular forces); give examples and Apply chemical concepts (mol, molar mass, concentrations,…)
  • Explain and apply laws of chemical reactions
    • Stoichiometric calculations
    • Kinetics and chemical equilibria
    • Thermodynamics
    • Acid-base equilibria
    • Redox reactions
  • explain the physical state of matter and apply the concepts of
    • phase changes
    • diffusion and osmosis
    • solubility

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • written exam with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: written exam
    Voorbeeld examenvragen:
