Course Content

Course description:

Reason and Engage is a multidisciplinary elective that aims to encourage critical reflection and engagement on current issues in society. Principles such as free inquiry, civic engagement, sense of responsibility, engaged science, inter- and multidisciplinarity and sustainability are guiding.

The course explores one overarching theme each year and aims to connect theoretical knowledge and societal engagement.

Organisation:

Reason and Engage consists of a series of lectures wherein speakers from various disciplines and expert domains discuss a different aspect of the overarching theme. The lectures take place at diverse locations in Brussels and are open to the public.

In addition, a series of seminars are scheduled. In the seminars we discuss the lectures before and after, and explain the approach of the assignments.

Reason and Engage is programmed in the first semester. All lectures and seminars take place in the evening from 6 to 8 pm.

Students' presence is required, absences are noted.

The course Reason and Engage is taught in English.

The course material consists of introductory texts and other source material for the lectures and assignments.

Only students who have already obtained 120 credits in their bachelor's programme are eligible to take this course.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

proces- en productevaluatie with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Note: Ter voorbereiding van het projectwerk dienen de studenten een projectfiche in. Deze bevat een korte beschrijving van de behandelde problematiek, een centrale vraagstelling, een samenvatting van de informatie die tijdens het verkennend bronnenonderzoek werd verwerkt, een overzicht van de leerdoelen voor het diepteonderzoek, een beschrijving van de gehanteerde (onderzoeks)methode en afspraken in verband met tussentijdse rapportage en uitwisseling.

Richtlijnen hierbij zijn:
o verwijzen naar kwaliteitsvol bronnenmateriaal en interactie met maatschappelijke actoren
o blijk geven van kennis en begrip van de gehanteerde concepten
o een relevante kwestie behandelen
o alle teamleden nemen verantwoordelijkheid voor het project, taken zijn evenwichtig verdeeld

Aan het eind van het academiejaar dienen de studenten een eindrapport in. Dit eindrapport wordt mondeling toegelicht tijdens een presentatiemoment (online of via fysieke bijeenkomst, al naargelang de omstandigheden).

o verwijzen naar kwaliteitsvol bronnenmateriaal en interactie met maatschappelijke actoren
o verschillende perspectieven integreren
o (systematisch) gebruik maken van wetenschappelijke theorieën, modellen en samenhangende interpretaties
o blijk geven van kennis en begrip van de gehanteerde concepten
o een onderbouwd standpunt uitwerken ten aanzien van de geformuleerde probleemstelling
o innovatieve / creatieve denkpistes aanreiken ten aanzien van de behandelde thematiek
o verwijzen naar persoonlijke verantwoordelijkheid en ervaring

Additional info regarding evaluation

There is no final exam for Reason and Engage.

The evaluation follows the pass/fail-principle.

The evaluation implies both process and product evaluation.

Process evaluation concerns presence, participation and input in the lectures and seminars.

Product evaluation relates to the quality of the assignments to be completed.

Any use of Generative AI must be within the general guidelines drawn up by the VUB on this subject. For each use, the student must state very clearly whether and how generative AI was used and must reflect on this in writing.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark

The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
