Course description:
Reason and Engage is a multidisciplinary elective that aims to encourage critical reflection and engagement on current issues in society. Principles such as free inquiry, civic engagement, sense of responsibility, engaged science, inter- and multidisciplinarity and sustainability are guiding.
The course explores one overarching theme each year and aims to connect theoretical knowledge and societal engagement.

Organisation:
Reason and Engage consists of a series of lectures wherein speakers from various disciplines and expert domains discuss a different aspect of the overarching theme. The lectures take place at diverse locations in Brussels and are open to the public.
In addition, a series of seminars are scheduled. In the seminars we discuss the lectures before and after, and explain the approach of the assignments.
Reason and Engage is programmed in the first semester. All lectures and seminars take place in the evening from 6 to 8 pm.
Students' presence is required, absences are noted.
The course Reason and Engage is taught in English.
The course material consists of introductory texts and other source material for the lectures and assignments.
Only students who have already obtained 120 credits in their bachelor's programme are eligible to take this course.
Learning outcomes:
-The students distinguish and know the different arguments presented in the academic debates on the overarching theme
-The students reflect critically and can formulate in a theoretically sound, informed and substantiated way their own ideas and opinions
-The students can involve the knowledge from other disciplines on their own expertise, field of knowledge and environment

There is no final exam for Reason and Engage.
The evaluation follows the pass/fail-principle.
The evaluation implies both process and product evaluation.
Process evaluation concerns presence, participation and input in the lectures and seminars.
Product evaluation relates to the quality of the assignments to be completed.
Any use of Generative AI must be within the general guidelines drawn up by the VUB on this subject. For each use, the student must state very clearly whether and how generative AI was used and must reflect on this in writing.
