Course Content

This course exists out of two components: sociology and scientific method. The scientific method component of the course aims at familiarizing the students with the principles of scientific research. The focus of this course is placed on searching for scientific literature and using it when writing a scientific paper. More specifically it means finding literature through web search engines (Web of Science, Google Scholar, the university library…), writing an academic paper, referencing and generating a bibliography, paraphrasing and citing.

The sociology component offers an elaboration on the broad theme of ‘social inequality’ or another sociological theme. The theme of social inequality is central in the assignments that aim to practice methodological skills. The students have to search for literature on a specific topic that can be related to social inequality. In this respect, students are thought to develop a critical attitude towards indicators that are used to measure social inequality.
