Course Content

Societal challenges call for systemic change. To equip tomorrow's professionals to tackle these challenges, this course combines online learning modules on project management and wicked challenges with an immediate application to a complex real-world problem presented from the professional field.

The course is organised according to the principles of Community Engaged Research and Learning. A project in cooperation with an external partner organisation provides the background for learning and also an opportunity to apply the newly acquired knowledge.

A complex practical problem is analysed from an inter-/transdisciplinary perspective for which solutions are designed taking into account all aspects of the problem and the preconditions of the given practical context. The work contains sufficient theoretical underpinnings and concrete explanations so that it can be interpreted by an external partner without much additional explanation.

Course material
Digital course material (Required) : Online learning modules are made available to students via the electronic learning platform Canvas supplemented by a self-composed project proposal (with scientific sources) by the student in relation to their challenge.
Additional info

More information on the study material, the study time calculation, and the teaching methods follows during the first lesson.

Online learning modules are made available to students via the electronic learning platform Canvas and are the compulsory study material. To support the online learning modules, guided ateliers are offered according to a flipped classroom approach. Students are encouraged to actively participate in the guided ateliers.

The language of instruction is mainly English as a result of cooperation with (inter)national partner institutions. Questions during the semester can be asked and answered in Dutch or English.

Generative AI can be used in this course, further details will be provided during course activities and the Canvas Course Platform. Any use of generative AI should be properly referenced.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

This course contributes to the following programme-specific learning outcomes of the Bachelor's degree in Adult Education (see overview): 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 13, 18, 19, 20, 21.

Students will also achieve course-specific learning outcomes.

By the end of this course, the student can:

  • recognise and insightfully apply concepts, theories and insights from the frameworks provided (strategic management, project management, inter-/transdisciplinarity, wicked challenges, critical thinking, systems thinking, communication skills) to current challenges;
  • conduct a systematic analysis of a problem through an interdisciplinary literature review;
  • apply research methods to substantiate a problem through stakeholders;
  • analyse a complex practical problem from a transdisciplinary perspective;
  • design deliverables for a problem, taking into account all aspects of the project proposal and contextual circumstances;
  • report under supervision on the project and designed deliverables in a clear, scientifically sound manner in writing and orally.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
SELF Practical Assignment determines 80% of the final mark.
Other determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Paper/Pitch case with a relative weight of 80 which comprises 80% of the final mark.

    Note: Paper and pitch project proposal to an audience of experts from the field (in group, with peer assessment and evaluation of cooperation with the partner and the teaching team).

Within the Other category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Permanent evaluation with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

    Note: Continuous evaluation during the semester via multiple-choice questions on online learning modules and accompanying guided ateliers (individual, with higher pass marking).

Additional info regarding evaluation

Students must obtain an overall average of at least 10/20 for all components to pass this course. If the average of all components is not at least 10/20, the partial grade for which you passed in the first exam session may be carried over to the second exam session and therefore does not have to be taken again.

In the first exam session, the student's overall grade for the practical assignment (paper and pitch) is not necessarily the same for all group members. The individual grade depends on a correction by peer evaluation, and evaluation of cooperation with the partner and the teaching team, where individual contribution is evaluated.

In the second exam session, the paper of the project proposal becomes an individual assignment according to the same requirements of the first exam session. The project proposal pitch is held exclusively for the teaching team, during which oral questions are also asked about the online learning modules. Students who participated in the first exam session work individually on their project proposal. Students who did not participate in the first exam session send an e-mail to the titular (no later than 1 July).

If you are absent on at least one of the compulsory exam parts, you will get an 'absent' on the final grading.

The partial results of the separate course parts are not transferable to the next academic year.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
