The course is illustrated by means of slides showing macroscopic and/or microscopic alterations in various tissues of patients suffering from a variety of frequent or important diseases.

Content EHBO

This course introduces the general principles of first aid. You can often prevent worse by immediately offering first aid. In this course we therefore discuss the basic principles of first aid, adult and child resuscitation, wound care and bandaging and the first aid approach for a number of common urgencies (chest pain, stroke, altered consciousness,…) . Due attention will also be paid to intramuscular injections.

WPO EHBO

The techniques from the lectures will be practiced during the seminars. The emphasis will be on adult and child CPR, intramuscular injections, wound care, bandaging and a number of stabilization techniques.

Learning Outcomes

Algemene competenties

Pathophysiology

The general aim is to provide insights into the mechanisms that underlie various diseases and into the molecular and cellular changes that accompany them. Since it is impossible to review the entire human pathology in 40h, the focus is on the understanding of mechanisms and concepts rather than on encyclopedic knowledge of symptoms, figures and formulas.
Specific aims include to acquire knowledge and understanding with respect to  inflammatory reactions, (disturbed) repair mechanisms, altered composition of body fluids, disrupted homeostasis, cancer, genetic diseases, multifactorial diseases (typical of affluent societies), biological markers of disease and the pathophysiology of important organ systems

EHBO

  • Being able to provide first aid according to the qualifications obtained
  • Being able to assess and ensure the safety of the situation
  • Assess the victim's condition
  • Correctly notify professional help
  • Adult CPR using an AED
  • Child resuscitation
  • Provide assistance with suffocation
  • To be able to correctly apply the learned techniques for wound care and bandaging
  • To be able to correctly administer an IM injection
  • Correctly perform a number of frequently required first aid techniques

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 80% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen schriftelijk with a relative weight of 80 which comprises 80% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Permanente Evaluatie EHBO with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Note: During the WPOs of First Aid, a point is generated for continuous evaluation every lesson. This point is given on the basis of preparation, cooperation and professional attitude.

Additional info regarding evaluation
Part PathofysiologieThere are 3 formal evaluation moments- test 1 on chapters 1 to 3- test 2 on chapters 4 to 6- exam in June/AugustStudents who pass test 1 are exempt from chapters 1 to 3 of the exam. Test 2 counts for 10% of the final marks (2 points out of 20).The tests and the exam consist of open questions and multiple choice questions.Part EHBOThere is a permanent evaluation in which points are awarded after each WPO for preparation, cooperation and professional attitude. The endpoint for the First Aid component is generated by averaging all continuous assessments.Compulsory attendance applies to the WPOs and these attendances are mandatory from the first WPO organized, regardless of the time of registration for the course unit. An unexcused absence will lead to a 0/20 for the permanent evaluation. Any absence must be communicated no later than the day itself to skillslab@vub.be, the faculty secretariat and the lecturers involved (for more information about who should be notified, you can consult the materials on Canvas). A valid medical certificate must be provided within 72 hours. If this has not happened, the absence will be considered unlawful.End pointThe endpoint for the Pathophysiology course is calculated by making a weighted average of the marks for the pathophysiology part and the first aid part. A weighted average is only made when the student has passed both pathophysiology and first aid (result of at least 50%). The pathophysiology part counts for 80%, the first aid part counts for 20%.Second sessionThe First Aid part cannot be retaken in the second examination period as the end point is generated by a permanent evaluation during the WPOs.The pathophysiology part can be retaken in the 2nd examination period. The partial mark for First Aid is retained in the 2nd examination period, provided that a result of at least 50% has been achieved.Partial marks if the credit is not obtained in the second examination periodWhen the student has passed first aid, the partial mark for first aid can be transferred to the next academic year at the explicit request of the student and subject to the agreement of the lecturer, and this must be applied for at the latest before the start of the new academic year. When the student has passed pathophysiology, the partial mark for pathophysiology can be transferred to the next academic year at the explicit request of the student and with the agreement of the lecturer, and this must be requested before the start of the new academic year at the latest.
Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
