Course Content

There is a special relation between on the one hand popular culture (movies, music, digital culture, …) and on the other hand the identity of young people. Historically, popular culture has been a great influence on our idea of the “adolescent”. It still is. In concrete terms, media have a big impact on how young people shape their own identities. This often leads to adult concerns and panics about media. But young people also shape society through experimentation and the discovery of new (cultural) practices. These new cultural practices enable them to express themselves, make new communities, and so also participate (politically). These interactions will take center stage in this course. In lectures we will discuss some important themes that shed light on the relation between identity and youth culture.

  • can historically situate various forms of responses to the rise of youth culture and explain their processes and attributes;
  • can analyze and evaluate concrete cases of the interaction between culture and youth using the theories learned with the outcome of formulating a recommendation on actions to be taken;
  • can interpret the interaction between young people and culture on the basis of the role of different contexts (home, digital environments) and institutions (the school)
  • can analyse and evaluate youth engagement on the basis of the frameworks provided on youth activism, participatory cultures and citizenship education.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Students have to get 10/20 on each part of the evaluation to receiving a passing grade for the course. If you get a failing grade for one of the two parts, you will receive a 9/20 or total grade (if that is lower than 9) for your end results. The part for which you received a passing grade in the first sitting, can be transfered to the second sitting and you will not have to be retaken or resubmitted; the same holds for passing grades for individual assignents.. The student who does want to retake an assigment or examen, has to send an e-mail to the teacher. The partial results of the seperate assignments and exams cannot be transferred to the next academic year.

If you are "absent" for one of the two parts (exam and assignments), you will get the grade "absent" for the total grade. If you do not submit one of the assignments, you will get "absent" on the part "assignments.
