Course Content

Purpose: The student carries out the research, based on the master thesis plan constructed in master thesis part 1 and reports and communicates about it.

Guidance: The student will be guided by the supervisor(s) during this module. At the start of the academic year student and supervisor make agreements with regards to the process (deadlines, guidance moments, seminars to be followed, etc).

Output: The master thesis should preferably be written in the form of a scientific article in which the following sections are discussed: abstract, introduction, research methods, results, discussion and conclusion.

  1. The student develops inquiry as a stance and is able to deal constructively with feedback throughout the research process.
  2. The student is able to take responsibility in establishing and performing scientific research, in consultation with the supervisor(s) and if relevant with an inquiry based team, and independently formulate idea’s or proposals that contribute to the research process.
  3. The student is able to manage the research process and apply appropriate communication skills (in meetings) and planning techniques for this process.
  4. The student uses an academic style of writing with respect for correct language usage (grammar, spelling…), formatting rules (structure, volume, reference style) and the rules regarding scientific integrity (no plagiarism, respect for privacy rules, rules regarding the collection and storage of data).
  5. The student is able to synthesize (inter)national theoretical frameworks and studies from current (international) literature to define a relevant and univocal research question in order to convincingly demonstrate the societal relevance and added value of the research for the educational practice.
  6. Based on the master thesis plan constructed in Master thesis part 1, the student is able to construct and perform a well-structured relevant and realistic research protocol where an appropriate methodology is described to answer the research question(s) and fits in the theoretical framework within which the research problem is situated.
  7. The student is able to clearly describe an appropriate methodological approach in detail to collect and analyze data.
  8. The student is able to perform data collection and data analysis correctly considering ethical and methodological guidelines and scientific integrity.
  9. The student is able to report the research findings succinctly, objectively, substantiated, transparently and in accordance with the agreed on formatting rules and reference style.
  10. The student is able to synthesize the main findings, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the conducted research and frame these findings within the relevant literature as well as critically discuss societal relevance and added value of the conducted research and make recommendations for future research.
  11. If relevant, the student is able to reflect on the consequences of the performed research for educational practice (at micro-, meso- or macro-level) and is able to formulate and implement innovative elements into the professional practice.
  12. If relevant, the student is able to collect, interpret and synthesize results of the conducted research or other related materials and make it accessible for the inquiry based team and other external partners in the educational practice with respect for the input of various stakeholders.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Master Thesis determines 90% of the final mark.
Other determines 10% of the final mark.

Within the Master Thesis category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Masterthesis with a relative weight of 80 which comprises 90% of the final mark.

    Note: The master thesis is preferably written in the form of a scientific article and contains proof of submission on the plagiarism software Turnitin.

    More detailed guidelines regarding formal aspects, deadlines, evaluation criteria and domain-specific deviating (formal) agreements can be found in a detailed manual on the course room (CANVAS) of this course.

    The jury determines the final score on the basis of a list of criteria generic within the Educational Master's programme. The jury consists of the promotor (and, if necessary, the second supervisor) and an additional member (ZAP/OAP/external, familiar with research domain/field). The composition of the jury is confirmed by the interfaculty council. The final score is the average of each judge's scores. In case the difference between the highest and lowest proposed mark turns out to be more than 4/20 (20% of the assessment scale), even after a discussion, an additional assessor is appointed.

Within the Other category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Procesevaluation with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 10% of the final mark.

    Note: Criteria related to social and organizational skills are taken into account when assessing the process. This score is given by the person who was responsible for the supervision. For the determination of the score, the supervisor can obtain additional information from relevant actors (e.g. partners in the field who were involved in the valorisation).

Additional info regarding evaluation

The student must obtain at least 10/20 on the master thesis part in order to pass the course unit.
