Course Content

‘Pharmacy project: molecules of life’ is an extension of the already acquired competencies during the ‘Pharmacy project: science communication’ in the 1st year Bachelor. The students therefore continue to work around their same pharmaceutical product and expand their portfolio with new knowledge and skills. Additional focus is placed on the molecular aspects of the active component(s) of the pharmaceutical product. More specifically, the potential interactions of the active component(s) with biomolecules at the molecular level should be discussed in more detail (what are the possible targets?). Students should also discuss possible plant alternatives for their pharmaceutical product.

Course material
Course text (Required) : Handleiding Lijnproject: moleculen van het leven, Tamara Vanhaecke en Pascale Petit
Practical course material (Required) : Extra referenties in de handleiding per onderwerp én info gegeven door de promotor/assistent
Additional info

- This course is organized on campus. Attendance is mandatory for all activities at all times.

- The Pharmacy project is part of a larger whole: it starts in the 1st year Bachelor, continues into the 3rd year and ends with a Bachelor thesis. In this project, students integrate their new knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired and apply it to their previous pharmaceutical product from ‘Pharmacy project: science communication’. They show this evolution in their portfolio, have discussions with the promoter and with the project leader (reflection) and give an oral presentation. The latter is given in English (because of aspects of internationalisation); the discussion with the panel is done in Dutch.

The above will allow the students to connect the various courses handled during one year (transversal) and the knowledge gained year after year (longitudinal). As such interdisciplinarity is promoted. Each year, the report on the study object is explored with the newly acquired skills, and the knowledge and skills obtained are integrated into the portfolio and presented before a panel. On the basis of the portfolio, each student has to demonstrate which competences have been achieved; this will also be discussed with the promoter and the project leader. The project is completed in the last Bachelor year. The portfolio then demonstrates the skills of the student. The portfolio is therefore linked to the goals and objectives of the Pharmacy curriculum. This way of working will facilitate the processing of the subject matter. After all, it requires that the students search the currently available study material for information relevant to their topic. Moreover, this approach is clearly interdisciplinary.

Learning Outcomes

General Competences

The students acquire the right skills (at the end of the 2nd year Bachelor) necessary to function as good pharmacists: acquiring knowledge and developing skills and attitudes. All this is achieved via project-based learning, self-study, guidance from promoter and project leader, reflective conversation with project leader feedback from promoter and project leader. The whole set of learning outcomes and learning experiences is compiled into a portfolio.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 20% of the final mark.
SELF Teamwork determines 20% of the final mark.
SELF Presentation determines 40% of the final mark.
SELF Report determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schriftelijke ondervraging with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Teamwork category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Zelf Groepswerk with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Presentation category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Zelf Presentatie with a relative weight of 40 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Report category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Zelf PORTFOLIO with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The evaluation is done during the hours foreseen for this course and occurs at group level as well as individual level.

The final grade is the weighted average of the grade obtained for the ‘individual contribution to the group work’ (20%), the ‘written portfolio’ (20%), the ‘oral group presentation & discussion’ (40%) and the individual ‘written test’ (20%). If a partial grade is less than or equal to 8/20, the final grade cannot be higher than the lowest partial grade. The part ‘individual contribution to the group work’ during the contacts is determined by the promoter/assistant whereby a correction based on a peer assessment score given by fellow students will be taken into account. During the contact moments, the promoter/assistant can interrogate students to evaluate whether each student cooperates well and is aware of the group work. The score for the group work can therefore be different for students belonging to the same group: if a student does not cooperate sufficiently, he/she can obtain a lower mark for this part. The partial grade ‘written portfolio’ is determined by the promoter/assistant and project supervisor. The partial grade for the ‘oral group presentation and discussion’ is determined by a panel of jury members of the educational team where the students give an oral presentation in English, the discussion is in Dutch. Only formative feedback will be given on the English language. The partial grade for the individual ‘written test’ is determined by the promoter/assistant. This test includes a number of open questions regarding the student’s own pharmaceutical product and multiple choice questions about the presentations attended during their own session.

- Participation to the group oral presentation & discussion and the written test is compulsory. Failure to participate in the oral presentation & discussion or the written test, either legitimate or illegitimate, automatically leads to 2nd session. In this case the student has to re-do the written test concerning the pharmaceutical product. In addition, the student will receive an extra assignment related to the selected pharmaceutical product and will have to give an oral presentation (in English) and answer (in Dutch) the questions asked by the promoter, course titular and/or project supervisor.

- In case a student is legitimately absent for maximum 1 day during the group work or the preparation of the portfolio, the student will receive an additional assignment related to the selected pharmaceutical product in 1st session.

- In case a student is legitimately absent during maximum 1 day during the group work or the preparation of the portfolio, the student will receive an additional assignment related to the selected pharmaceutical product in 2nd session.

- In case a student is legitimately or illegitimately absent during more than 1 day of the period scheduled for ‘Pharmacy project: molecules of life’, the student will be referred to the next academic year. Because during ‘Pharmacy project: molecules of life’ different skills are tested, which cannot be evaluated on the basis of an individual assignment, otherwise a large part of the goals and objectives of the Pharmacy project would not be reached.

- A partial exemption for the 2nd session can be obtained if at least 10/20 was achieved for that part. A partial exemption cannot be obtained for the next academic year.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
