Course Content

The ASO is given the chance to practice a wide array of domains within the specialism throughout the education.  

During these internships the ASO acquires specific skills on: 

  • Lung function research 

  • Spirometry 

  • Flow-volume loops 

  • Body plethysmography  

  • Dilution techniques 

  • Measurement of diffusion capacity 

  • Cardiopulmonary effort research 

  • Test of 6 minutes of walking 

  • Inhalation provocation research 

  • Measurement of maximal in- and expiratory pressure 

  • Arterial blood-gas analysis (puncture and interpretation) 

  • Invasive procedures 

  • Blind pleurabiopsy with Abrahams needle 

  • Transthoracic biopsy and pleural puncture (diagnostic/evacuating) 

  • Manual aspiration of pneumothorax 

  • Placement of thorax drain 

  • Flexible bronchoscopy  

  • Bronchoalveolar lavage  

  • Endotracheal intubation 

  • Central venous catheterization  

Limited technical experience with rigid bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy (pleurodeses, sympatheticysis), EBUS, specific bronchoprovocation tests, artificial respiration at home 

Skin allergic investigation, placement of intradermal tuberculin test 

Polysomnography (indication, interpretation) 

Artificial respiration techniques (invasive and non-invasive) 

Trachea cannula exchanges 

Oxygen therapy (acute and chronic)

Additional info
  • Technical activities/endoscopy (flexible endoscopy, punctures, arterial blood-gas analysis), 3h/day 

  • Lung function lab (1h/day) or ergospirometry (2x 3h per week) 

  • Operative activity under guidance of a staff member (rigid bronchoscopy, flexible bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy, intubation) 

  • Sleeping lab (3h/week) 

  • RIZIV convention AOT (including CPAP) and LTOT, 1h/day

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Portfolio with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.
