Course Content

In this course, we explore inequalities in the educational context and how this differs for specific, social groups (such as ethnic groups, LGBTQIA+, students from disadvantaged families and with disabilities). It provides an introduction to the concepts of diversity and inclusion and what that means in the broad educational sector. It provides insight into the scope and impact of differences in a variety of contexts. By discussing different authors, theoretical frameworks and concepts, we gain insight into the mechanisms at the macro, meso and micro levels that contribute to these inequalities and ways to deal with them. We critically analyze different avenues that could remedy these inequalities and how to deal with them in educational contexts.

For this course, a basic open attitude is expected as well as critical thinking and research skills.

Learning Outcomes

Algemene competenties

At the end of this course, students:

  • Have knowledge of the existing educational inequality for certain societal groups
  • Can identify mechanisms creating these different educational conditions
  • Can critically analyze the difficulties an individual from a specific background may face given the characteristics of the educational context
  • Are able to apply in a critical and reasoned way the theoretical frameworks and concepts discussed in class to a real life situation or case
  • Can identify and discuss (dis)advantages of several possibilities for inclusion in the educational context
  • Can work independently and in group on a literature and practice-research on a current diversity-topic. Students can report on this research in both oral and written format.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 65% of the final mark.
LEC Teamwork determines 35% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written Exam with a relative weight of 65 which comprises 65% of the final mark.

Note: Multiple choice and open questions

Within the LEC Teamwork category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Group assignment with a relative weight of 35 which comprises 35% of the final mark.

Note: Oral presentation and peer assesment

Additional info regarding evaluation

The written exam will consist of open-ended and multiple-choice questions. The scoring will be communicated during the semester and on the exam form.

Students must score a minimum of 10/20 on each section to pass this course section. If you have a failing grade on any of the components, you will receive the lowest partial grade as your final grade. The partial grade you passed in the first session may be taken into the second session and therefore you do not have to retake it.

A retake in the second session is possible for the written exam.

A retake in the second session of the group assignment follows the following guidelines:

1. Participation in first session but failed:

The second session consists of an individual assignment. This assumes the group assignment that was covered in the group of which the student was a member (during the semester). The grading of the second session is based on the contribution/addition (different perspective, different methodology, ...) that the student makes to what has already been worked out (in the form of a paper). In addition to the paper, the student should also give a brief individual oral explanation of the paper and specifically his/her contribution.

2. For students who did not participate in the first session, the group assignment will be replaced by an alternative assignment.
