Course Content

This is an upper intermediate-level English course, geared to an academic setting. The course aims to:

- develop the skills needed to follow a university-level course taught in English

- make participants aware of the features characteristic of academic register in English, with a particular emphasis on vocabulary

- allow participants to apply their knowledge of academic register through the task of summary/abstract writing

- refresh key grammar points

- give participants the opportunity to develp their presentation skills in English

Students who have already passed Academic English 3 or 5 cannot take this course.

Course material is made available throughout the semester via Canvas. Attendance in class is compulsory for this course. 

Please note that in order to register for this course students must:

EITHER

a) have successfully completed the course Academic English I

OR

b) have taken the ACTO English placement test, and obtained a result in the appropriate range for this course. If your result is not in the appropriate range, it is not possible for you to register for this course, even if it is offered as part of your study programme.

- The student demonstrates knowledge and accurate application of the rules of English grammar concerning a range of different topics.

- The student is familiar with academic vocabulary for a range of topics and can apply this in both controlled exercises and their own academic texts, both spoken and written.

- The student can deliver a clear, concise and well-structured academic presentation on a topic with which they are familiar.

- The student is capable of independently producing a clear, concise and well-structured written summary of the key information from an Anglophone text.

- The student is capable of independently producing a clear, concise and well-structured written abstract to their own academic presentation. 

- The student demonstrates an awareness and command of certain key language skills required in an academic context, such as adapting a suitable register and paraphrasing the ideas of others in their own words, with appropriate reference to the original source where appropriate.  

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
PRAC Presentation determines 25% of the final mark.
PRAC Practical Assignment determines 20% of the final mark.
PRAC Paper determines 40% of the final mark.
Other determines 15% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Presentation category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral presentation with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 25% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Vocabulary and grammar test with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Paper category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Writing assignments with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

Within the Other category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Continuous assessment with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 15% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

All assessment for this course takes place during the semester. The final grade is composed based on the following categories:

  • Continuous assessment (15%): 5% submission of practice summary, 5% participation in two vocabulary and grammar checks, 5% delivery of practice presentation
  • Writing assignments (40%): 20% submission of one or two summaries, 20% submission of abstract
  • Presentation (25%)
  • Final vocabulary and grammar test during the semester (20%)

Additional information regarding evaluation

  • In the first exam session, assessment is on the basis of continuous assessment (15%), writing assignments (40%), a presentation (25%) and a final vocabulary and grammar test (20%). All assessment takes place during the semester.
  • Students who do not complete the writing assignments are unable to pass the course in the first exam session.
  • Students who do not deliver their final presentation are unable to pass the course in the first exam session. 
  • Students who do not participate in the final vocabulary and grammar test are unable to pass the course in the first exam session. 
  • Students who do not complete the continuous assessment component will receive a score of 0 for this assessment component but are still eligible to be assessed for the course in the first exam session.
  • Attendance in class is mandatory. Students who do not attend at least 80% of the in-class lesson hours are unable to pass the course in the first exam session.
  • In the second examination session, assessment is on the basis of a presentation (35%), a writing assignment (45%) and a vocabulary and grammar test (20%), all of which will take place during the exam period.
  • Students who do not achieve an overall pass grade in the first exam session may choose to carry over to the second exam period their scores for the writing assignments, presentation or vocabulary and grammar test for which they achieved a pass grade (10/20 or higher). 
  • In both the first and second exam session, an overall final grade of 10/20 or above is sufficient to pass the course even if a pass grade has not been achieved for each individual assessment component.
  • No scores for individual assessment components or exams may be carried over to a subsequent year.

Het eindcijfer is samengesteld op basis van de volgende categorieën:

- Permanente evaluatie (15%): indienen van oefenensamenvatting (5%), deelname aan twee woordenschat- en grammaticachecks (5%) en geven van oefenpresentatie (5%)
Schrijfopdrachten (40%): indienen van één of twee samenvattingen (20%), indienen van een abstract (20%)
- Presentatie (25%)
- Eindtoets woordenschat en grammatica (20%)

 

Aanvullende informatie over evaluatie

- In de eerste examenzittijd vindt de beoordeling plaats op basis van permanente evaluatie (15%), schrijfopdrachten (40%), een presentatie (25%) en een eindtoets woordenschat en grammatica (20%).
- Indienen van de schrijfopdrachten is noodzakelijk om een eindcijfer voor deze cursus te krijgen.
- Deelname aan de presentatieopdracht is noodzakelijk om een eindcijfer voor deze cursus te krijgen.
- Deelname aan de eindtoets woordenschat en grammatica is noodzakelijk om eindcijfer voor deze cursus te krijgen. 
- Deelname aan de permanente evaluatie is niet noodzakelijk om een eindcijfer voor deze cursus te krijgen. 
- Aanwezigheid in minstens 80% van de lessen is noodzakelijk om een eindcijfer voor deze cursus te krijgen. 
- In de tweede examenzittijd vindt de beoordeling plaats aan de hand van een schrijfopdracht (45%), een presentatie (35%) en een eindtoets woordenschat en grammatica (20%). 
- Studenten die in de eerste examenzittijd geen voldoende hebben gehaald, kunnen ervoor kiezen hun score voor de schrijfopdrachten, de presentatie of de eindtoets woordenschat en grammatica waarvoor ze in de eerste examenzittijd een voldoende hebben behaald, over te dragen naar de tweede examensessie. Elk onderdeel dat niet werd afgelegd of waarvoor geen voldoende werd behaald in de eerste zittijd, moet opnieuw worden afgelegd in de tweede zittijd. 
- Zowel in de eerste als in de tweede examenperiode is een totaal eindcijfer van 10/20 of hoger voldoende om te slagen voor de cursus, zelfs indien niet voor elk individueel beoordelingsonderdeel een voldoende werd behaald.
- Scores voor individuele beoordelingsonderdelen of examens mogen niet worden overgedragen naar een volgend academiejaar.
