Course Content

Within this internship the student gets acquainted with different aspects of physical activity, fitness and health. There are 5 mandatory items in which the student has the possibility to make choices in function of his or her interests.These choices need approval of the teaching staff.

Mandatory items:

1) follow-up of 1st year student in PE (testing, setting up personalized program and follow up). For this part 20 hours are foreseen.

2) A total of 5hours is allotted to observation in the following fitness settings: (1) a fitness centre with adequate counselling and guidance; (2) a fitness centre without counselling and guidance (3) personal training. Within this task the following aspects need to be analysed and discussed critically: training purpose of the subjects; type of training/exercise, quality versus cost of the counselling/guidance

3)  A total of 40 hours is allotted to the recruitment and guidance of 2 novice fitness practitioners. Te recruitment is organised together with the Sport service of the VUB (Mr Dirk Van De Wiele).  After the intake session and the analysis of the starting situation the students propose a training program which can be applied after control by the teaching staff. The students provides different contact moments and makes a report concerning the different aspects of his activities with the subject (aim of the training, specific aspects of the program, progress, problems…). A sufficiently long period should be covered, in order to allow evaluation of improvements made.

4)     A total of 5 hours is allotted to extra muros lessons, symposia, scientific congresses within the broad domain of physical activity, fitness, health and nutrition.

5) For at least 50 hours, the student is allowed to opt for a specific domain for further specialisation such as fitness classes, personal training, physical coaching, health promotion, etc. Choices need to be approved by the teaching team.

The student makes a dossier with an objective (data, hours, programs, testings…) and a subjective part (strength and weaknesses). A report (on a specially designed form) of the supervisor of the specific internship location is asked.

Within the Other category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Stage with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The internship dossier is taken into account as well as the discussion and the critical analysis of the internship during an oral exam. The marks are a combination of the dossier, the discussion, the evaluation(s) of the supervisor, the evaluation of the internal supervisor (after a visit on location). If any of the mandatory items is missing in the dossier, the student can not succeed for this course.
