Inhoud

In this course, students will learn how to start up a project or company, develop their business case and write a business plan.

The course is organized along four main steps in the entrepreneurial process:

Analysis of the business environment and ecosystem
Generation and development of a business idea, suited to the entrepreneur’s core assets and ambitions, and customer discovery to a problem-solution and product-market fit
Evaluation of key assumptions and verification of hypotheses
Writing and pitching of the plan, including the financial plan

Throughout these four stages, student groups generate and develop their own business idea, gather information, convince others to cooperate and adapt their business idea according to the ongoing analysis.

Teaching Methods

This description of the teaching methods is indicative, in order to assess the expected study load.

HOC: collective contact moments during which the lecturer and the team engaged with learning materials and coach the students in their assignment: 24 hours
SELF: group work and preparation of the business plan and its presentation during the exam: 62 hours

Leerresultaten

General competences

This course contributes to the competences of graduates on how to develop new ideas, elaborate a business plan and pitch it. We approach the business plan development from a process perspective, and hence students gain basic competences in the different stages of the entrepreneurial process.

At the end of the course, students are able to:

Analyze the business environment, identify relevant trends and generate business ideas;
Formulate key assumptions related to their value proposition and business model;
Draft financial plans based on planned activities and assumptions;
Gather market information in order to develop a solid business and financial plan;
Communicate and collaborate effectively with other group members.

Beoordelingsinformatie

De beoordeling bestaat uit volgende opdrachtcategorieën:
Examen Schriftelijk bepaalt 40% van het eindcijfer

Examen Andere bepaalt 60% van het eindcijfer

Binnen de categorie Examen Schriftelijk dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

Business Plan met een wegingsfactor 40 en aldus 40% van het totale eindcijfer.

Binnen de categorie Examen Andere dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

Pitch met een wegingsfactor 30 en aldus 30% van het totale eindcijfer.
Permanent Evaluation met een wegingsfactor 30 en aldus 30% van het totale eindcijfer.

The Business Plan is developed in groups, with intermediate assignments throughout the semester to guide the process. During the exam period, the business plan is pitched by the group after which a Q&A session takes place.

The final group score is composed as follows:

40% based on the final deliverable (business plan)
30% based on the final presentation (pitch) and defense
30% based on permanent evaluation (e.g. intermediate presentations and discussions throughout the semester)

This score will be modified based on a peer evaluation which takes place after the pitch (exam).

In the second examination session, students can work individually or in smaller group on the improvement of their business plan exercise.
