Course Content

The course is an exploration of the 21st-century paradigms of "heritage" and of "critical heritage studies".

1) How has the semantic field of the concept of "heritage" ("patrimoine"/"heritage") evolved before and in the 21st century? What role has UNESCO played in this process since World War II? Which precursors of what is called "heritage" in the 2020s existed in and around France before and after the French Revolution? Is it (already) possible to differentiate those evolutions from global long-term perspectives?

2) Subsidiarity and heritage policy (with a focus on the 21st century): discussion of recent and expected evolutions of heritage policy in Flanders and by extension Belgium, in an international perspective. In addition to the competent authorities in Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels and the heritage decrees and regulations in force, the relevant international texts are studied. Particular attention is paid to the Council of Europe's Framework Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society (Faro, 2005). We explore in what ways actors in Flanders (could) engage with the repertoire of available powerful texts and instruments of UNESCO, of international NGOs, of European institutions and Belgian, Flemish and local governments and organizations.  We also examine how the heritage field in Flanders has crystallized in the 21st century and can evolve in the following years.

3) Heritage skills, methods, techniques and exemplary practices: an anthology

4) What debates are taking place within the field of critical heritage studies in the current and previous decade? How does this contribute to inter-, trans- and post-disciplinary approaches to heritage?
