180 h study time
Offer 1 with catalog number 1016416BNR for all students in the 2nd semester at a (B) Bachelor - advanced level.
This course focuses on both qualitative and quantitative data analysis. It reiterates the empirical research cycle and the difference between and the added value of qualitative and quantitative research within the Adult Educational Sciences. In addition, the course deepens various (basic) quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques that are current within research in the Adult Educational Sciences using software (e.g., SPSS; MAXQDA and/or NVIVO). We build on knowledge of Research Methods and Techniques of the Adult Educational Sciences and Statistics I: Measurement scales and descriptive statistics. Basic Mathematics as specified in the final requirements for the SO (3 hours of mathematics) are necessary prior knowledge for the interpretation of statistical models, and therefore necessary prior knowledge for the course unit.
More information on the contents of the course, (mandatory or optional) study materials and the calculation of study hours will be given during the first class.
Guest lectures can be recorded in the course.
Generative AI can be used in this course, further details will be provided during course activities and the Canvas Course Platform. Any use of generative AI should be properly referenced.

... transcribe data and report results according to common methods of qualitative research
... conduct common tests using SPSS, and can interpret and report the result
... can perform various qualitative and quantitative analyses on a dataset and argue why these were chosen.
... make connections between different modes of analysis and larger frameworks of qualitative and quantitative research.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 40% of the final mark.
PRAC Teamwork determines 60% of the final mark.
Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
Within the PRAC Teamwork category, the following assignments need to be completed:
Students must achieve a minimum of 10/20 on each component (exam, group assignment qualitative analysis and group assignment quantitative analysis) to pass this course. If you have a failing grade in one of these three components, you will be assigned the lowest partial grade as your final score. The partial grade for which you passed in the first session may be taken into the second session and therefore you do not have to take it again.
The second sitting consists out of an exam and/or group assignment following the same criteria as the first sitting
The student who still wishes to retake the task sends an e-mail to the instructor.
If you are "absent" for one part, you will receive an "absent" for the entire grade.
The partial results of the individual assignments are not transferable to the next academic year.
The final score for the group assignment isn't necessarily the same for all group members. The individual score depends on the assessment by other students (peer-assessment) where the individual contribution is evaluated. The lecturer can decide to increase, decrease or disregard the adjustment factor if scores are deemed to be unreliable. This decision will in principle only be taken very rarely, but will always be based on clear arguments, analyses and/or additional observations/discussions. If a student does not submit their peer assessment within the proposed deadline, the teacher can decide for the maximum grade deduction.
