Course Content

Students will learn how to write a narrative review. The review will focus on the theoretical background of the research project in the Research training to be done in the 2nd master year. The promoter of the traineeship will propose a research project and indicate the biomedical research area and scientific problems relevant for the project. The content of the review will be mainly based on the international scientific literature, and students are expected to be able to use search strategies learned in the bachelor years. Guidance for writing the review will be provided during the writing process by the teacher of the course.

Course material
Digital course material (Recommended) : Ten Simple Rules for Writing a Literature Review, Marco Pautasso, PLoS Comput Biol 9(7): e1003149. doi:10.1371/journal.pcbi.1003149
Additional info

The review should include the following sections:

1) Title page (title - name - year - research group - institution)
2) Summary/Abstract
3) Introduction

4) Search strategy
5) Overview of the literature
6) Discussion
7) Reference list
8) Acknowledgements (when applicable)

Learning Outcomes

Algemene competenties

The student is able to:

·    define the topic and scope of the literature review in collaboration with the promoter.

·    autonomously scan the literature on a scientific topic using the current methods for literature research.

·    define the aim of the literature review.

·    autonomously identify valid and unbiased results from the literature.

·    present data from the literature in the form of a review paper which is understandable for biomedical researchers not working in the field of research covered by the review.

·    autonomously draw conclusions from the data in the literature and present suggestions for further research.

·    Autonomously write of a concise but comprehensive summary of the literature review.

In summary, the student will obtain insight into the scientific literature on a given subject and gain skills for autonomously writing a literature review for which the student has final responsibility.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
SELF Paper determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Paper category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Literatuurstudie with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

-The deadlines for submission of the abstract and review will be communicated via canvas.

-The literature study will be evaluated by both the promotor and the teacher of the course. The day-to-day work will be taken into account.

-It is not allowed to use generative AI to generate output related to the evaluation task.

-In case plagiarism is detected or the abstract/review was not submitted in time, a score ‘0’ will be given. In case of an insufficient score, the student has to write a new review on another subject.
