Course Content

In this course, students are introduced to the organisational structures of service provision and healthcare in Flanders. A number of important trends and developments in the professional healthcare context are highlighted and used as a framework to critically reflect on the (current) organization of service provision and care.

Following themes will be discussed:
- Contexualisation and framing: history, actors, legislative frameworks and financing mechanisms
- Organisation (structures) in health care in Flanders: child and youth services + service provision for adults (including the elderly)
- Tendencies and themes: "transitions in healthcare" and "forced care"

In addition to the lectures, students get to know the organization of service provision more in-depth, through self-study. Starting from case studies and articles in popular media, a group assignment is worked out and a workpiece (in group) is prepared.
 

Learning trajectory ‘Reflection and portfolio’
This course is also part of the 'Reflection and portfolio learning line'. Through reflection sessions in small groups (WPO reflection and portfolio -RP), students systematically analyze their competency-based skills, learning growth, and experiences with professional practice. They succeed in integrating offered frames of reference into their reflection. The sessions are structured according to the GROWS-framework.

Within the course 'Organization of counseling', 2 contact hours WPO are set up for the learning line, and 12 hours are performed as self-study (in preparation for WPO, and reflection task).

Compulsory study material includes a text bundle + powerpoint presentations of the lectures. These are made available to the students via the digital learning platform.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 75% of the final mark.
PRAC Practical Assignment determines 25% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen schriftelijk with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 75% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Groepspaper en Portfoliotaak with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 25% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The evaluation includes a paper (WPO), a reflection task in line with the 'Reflection and Portfolio' curriculum and a written exam.

Paper (WPO): students make a group work: based on case descriptions, they explore the counseling landscape in more depth and on the basis of articles in the popular media, they reflect critically on the organization of the assistance. In this evaluation paper, the use of generative AI is permitted to support in any way possible.  Any use of generative AI must be indicated appropriately.

Reflection task in line with the learning line 'Reflection and Portfolio (WPO): Reflectiontask, with Pass/fail system

Exam: the exam is in writing. It is a closed book exam with theoretical questions about the offered learning material in the form of multiple choice questions and/or some open questions.The multiple-choice exam will be graded by positive scoring with Higher Caesura. Thus, no points will be deducted for a wrong answer. On the other hand, scoring by guessing will be incorporated into the final grade by increasing the pass mark (= caesura). The caesura for the exam and the exact conversion table will be communicated in a timely manner on Canvas and in the exam instructions. The exam strategy by this method is simple: do your best on all of the exam, questions you don't know or partially know, guess to the best of your ability, without worrying about possible point deductions.


Students must participate in and pass for all evaluation components in order to pass this course. If the student achieves a failing grade on the total score but has passed one of the evaluation components, it is possible to transfer the points of the part for which they have passed from 1st to 2nd session within the same academic year.

Written exam: 75% (mostly MC, number of open questions)
WPO: 25%, of which 85% on the group paper and 15% for the portfolio task 'Reflection and portfolio'
