To be able to enroll for 'Cultural and artistic current affairs', students of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy have to be succesfully passed for at least 30 ECTS credits in the Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and Literature.

Course Content

This course offers insights into the role of art and culture in contemporary society. Within this course unit, the student (1) is introduced to the contemporary artistic and cultural landscape of Brussels and (2) is introduced to contemporary cultural products and theoretical concepts.

(1) On one hand, the course is conceived as an introduction to the cultural landscape and the different branches of art (theatre, dance, music, visual arts, film, ...), with particular attention to the policy aspects in these different sectors. The student learns to define basic concepts of the cultural and artistic world and to situate important agents.

(2) On the other hand, the course works on the questions, "How does art reflect on contemporary society?" and "How can artistic media be used for social change?". Students learn to define theoretical concepts and can employ them in their thoughtful critical argumentation about the interaction between art, culture and society.

Additional info

The course consists of a variety of working formats, such as lectures, interactive lectures, workshops, participation in artistic and cultural events and writing sessions. To achieve the objective of the course, students will (i) actively participate in the various group sessions, (ii) immerse themselves in the cultural offerings of Brussels on an independent basis, and (iii) assimilate the class content and various study materials into a critical argument in the form of an individual writing assignment.

Teaching materials are the required study materials and the student's own class notes. Additional texts, articles, exercises, presentations are made available to students via the electronic learning platform Canvas in support of the lectures.

- The student can critically reflect on the role of art and culture in contemporary society based on well-considered arguments, especially on the artistic actuality and social issues addressed therein.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 20% of the final mark.
SELF Practical Assignment determines 80% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Permanent evaluation with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Assignments with a relative weight of 80 which comprises 80% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Absence from at least one of the compulsory examination components (written exam as part of permanent evaluation and assignments) will result in absence for the overall assessment. 

Students must obtain an overall average of at least 10/20 for all components to pass this course. If you have a passing grade in one of the components, but the average of all components is not at least 10/20, you may take the partial grade you passed in the first sitting into the second sitting and therefore do not have to retake it.

The second sitting consists of an assignment and/or exam according to the same requirements of the first sitting. If you are absent for at least one of the parts, you will be awarded an "Absent" as an overall grade for the Programme Part. The partial results of the separate course parts are not transferable to the next academic year.
