Course Content

This course consists of a theoretical part and of exercises. The theoretical part consists of three sections: (a) the working field of the sport psychologist in the fields of application of sport and exercise psychology, (b) the role of individual characteristics (personality, motivation, arousal and stress, behavioural change) of influence on participants' participation in sport and exercise and (c) the role of group processes, leadership and communication of influence on participants' participation in sport and exercise. The exercise part of this course consists of exercises made during as well as outside the ex-cathedra courses and which need to be compiled and finalised by each student in an individual work book.

- The course material consists of slides of the ex-cathedra part of the course and scientific articles made available on Canvas and VUB digital library, and the individual workbook.

- Presence during the lessons is compulsory. Students can not missed more than one lesson. Students who will be absent for a lesson need to inform via mail the professor before the start of the lesson they will miss. In this mail students need to provide information on the reason for their absence, the group to which they belong, how they will follow up and continue their active participation in their group and how to will ensure to update their individual work book.

- The lessons are taught during a restricted number of weeks. The duration of the lessons is longer and can vary between 4 to 6 hours (with regular breaks).

- Take into account that, if required, this course can be taught face-to-face (on campus) or in distance (online) or by a combination of both.

This course aims at enabling the students to:
(1) gain insight into the scientific field of sport and exercise psychology and its fields of application;
(2) gain knowledge on specific topics from research and application of sport and exercise psychology;
(3) get acquainted with a selection of sport and exercise psychology instruments;
(4) gain an overview of sport and exercise psychology literature.

After this course, the student should be able:
A. to give a description of the content of:
(1) the working field of the sport psychologist in the fields of application of sport and exercise psychology;
(2) characteristics (personality, motivation, arousal and stress) of participants that may be of influence on their participation in sports and exercise;
(3) situational characteristics (elite sport, competitive sport, recreational sport, rehabilitation, PE teaching) that may be of influence on their participation in sports and exercise;
(4) group processes, leadership and communication that may be of influence on their participation in sports and exercise;
(5) performance-enhancement techniques (arousal regulation, imagery, self-confidence, goal setting, concentration) and mental routines;
(6) the interaction between the participation in sports and exercise and the (physical, mental, social) wellbeing and the development of participants;
B. to provide an overview of:
(1) sport and exercise psychology instruments;
(2) relevant sport and exercise psychology literature.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 75% of the final mark.
PRAC Report determines 25% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schriftelijk Examen with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 75% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Report category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Indienen individueel werkboek with a relative weight of 25 which comprises 25% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

- A student can only take the exam if she/he has met all of the following requirements:

1. during the lessons having been part of and actively participate in a group of students. The composition of the groups will be announced during the ex-cathedra course and on Canvas;

2. having submit an individual workbook before the date announced during the lessons and on Canvas. The procedure for submission of the individual work book will be announced during the lessons and on Canvas;

3. not having missed more than one lesson (except for medical reasons as submitted to the faculty secretary or for REFLEX students).

- The exam during the first exam period is a written exam. During the written exam students can (a) only use something to write and correct what they have written and (b) only have something to drink on their desk, and (c) have no digital tools (e.g., mobile phone) with them to their desk.

- The final mark for this course will consist of: (a) the mark for the exam (counts for 75% of the final mark), (b) submission of the individual workbook (counts for 25% of the final mark).

- Students who cannot or who are not eligible to take the exam in the first exam period can take the exam during the next exam period if they have submitted their individual workbook before the date announced on Canvas. The content, procedure for submission of the individual work book will be announced on Canvas. The exam will be oral.

- Take into account that, if required, the evaluation of this course can be done face-to-face (on campus) or in distance (online) or by a combination of both.
