Course Content

This course has two parts: 'Wellbeing, Physical Activity and health' and 'First Aid'. The first gives more insight in the need for a healthy lifestyle, prevention of illness and diseases, and modern individual and social health problems such as stress and burn out. In the second part, first aid is practiced to learn to handle correct and efficient in different situations and to become more aware of injury prevention. Thanks to the availability of different tools/apps, mannikins and AED's, students have hands-on experience with different victims (age groups). The approach of the lessons is based on blended-learning with lots of video material available on the platform and the possibility to send in the own CPR performances made during hands-on time with our manikins.

Additional info

The specific content of this course requires a correct performance of the first aid assignments, in order to acquire the practical skills and to learn the teaching methods learned in the lessons. Special attention is paid to peer feed back via apps and instruction cards. The teacher randomly monitors the student’s activities with online exercises and completion forms. Anyone who does not actively practice with the tools provided may be refused the practical first aid exam.

The assessment of the practical skills will be done by a team of internal and external examinators (with specific diploma and competences).

Those students who prove they have the competences according to the Red Cross (First Aid and Helper First Aid), will receive a certificate of Red Cross after the exam.

Students with a special and official recognized situation (high level athletes, international students, students with a job, …) must contact the teacher in the beginning of the semester to agree on the approach of missing practical sessions. Also, students who are absent due to illness in the long term, need to take contact with the teacher to see if there is a possibility to solve the missed lessons.

As the theory lessons are given in Dutch, exchange students will follow a separate tutorship consisting in self-study of information from books and internet indicated by the professor. For the practical 'first aid' lessons, course material in English will be available and the skills can be practiced without speaking Dutch.

Additional info regarding evaluation

If there are insufficient marks on one or both parts (< 8/20), there will be no weighted average and the lowest partial result will be the total exam result. If the student scores an insufficient grade on CPR (a <10/20), the grade for First Aid as well as that of the entire course is brought down to this grade, with a maximum of 9/20, and the student cannot pass the subject. Since the students on internship are expected to be able to perform first aid, and CPR in particular, this test is exclusive.
External examiners can be called in during the first aid exam, working with the same criteria/rubrics/apps as the course instructor and assistant.

The part of 'Well-being, Exercise and Health' is evaluated based on: multiple choice questions and a number of open questions. The multiple choice exam will be graded by positive scoring with a higher pass mark. So no points are deducted for an incorrect answer. Earning points by gambling, on the other hand, is processed in the end point by increasing the passing threshold (=pass mark). The cut-off mark for the exam and the exact conversion table will be communicated on the canvas and the exam instructions.

Partial exemptions for both parts (Welfare, Exercise and Health as well as for first aid) are possible (from 10/20), both from the first to the second examination period and to the next academic year. Students need to accept these partial result.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
