Course Content

The ‘Research Practicum Adult Education Sciences’ continues to build on the skills acquired as part of the 'Research methods and techniques for adult educational sciences' training course . The Research practicum places emphasis both on quantitative as qualitative research. The objective is to design and execute a research within the field of adult educational sciences together with the students. In doing so, each phase of the empirical cycle (problem statement, literature review, research questions, choosing research design, interviewing, focusgroups, survey, qualitative and quantitative data-analysis, reporting) is explained and eloborated in a practical sense.

By the end of the 'Adult Education Sciences Research Practicum', the students have completed a full empirical cycle and have written a personal research design. Both the theory and the practical sessions of the research practicum are focused as much as possible on the masters thesis of the student, which they will be required to produce in the following year.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
SELF Paper determines 50% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral Exam with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Note: Students are required to submit a research proposal and defend it orally during the exam.

Within the SELF Paper category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Paper research proposal with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Students are required to submit a research proposal and present an oral defence thereof at the exam.
The research proposal (paper) counts for 50%, the oral exam counts for 50%.
Students need to pass both assignments, in order to have a final pass.

If the student did not pass either component in the first exam period, both components must be retaken in the second examination period. If you have a failing grade for either of the two components, you will receive the lowest partial grade as the final score. Partial grades can not be carried over to the second examination period and thus both parts will have to be resumed in the second session.

Absence from a mandatory part of the evaluation leads to an absence as result code.

The partial results of the Oral Examination (50%) and the Paper Research Proposal (50%) cannot be transferred to the next academic year.

The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
